Social networks remain the key aspect of Internet usage for adolescents. In addition to search engines and video-sharing sites, online communities are one of the three applications on the Internet which are most commonly used by a total 78 percent of the 12 - to 19-year-old in Germany at least several times per week. 57 percent visit their own or other profiles on the network even daily. This is proven by the results of the JIM study 2012 (Youth, Information, (Multi-) Media).

The German study series JIM is carried out by the Media Educational Research Association Southwest since 1998, in collaboration with the Southwest Broadcasting. The representative study pictures the media behavior of young people in Germany. For the survey approximately 1,200 young people between 12 and 19 years were interviews via telephone in early summer 2012. In addition to facts on media literacy, the study series includes the basic data on leisure activities of young people and media usage data with regards to television, radio, Internet, mobile phones, books and computer games.
